Fin Chagrin

The horses are prepared for battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

Proverbs 21:31

Five minutes before swim practice, my daughter started crying. “I forgot my fins!”

I assured her, “I’ll zip home and get them for you.”

So while she dipped, I zipped over four sets of railroad tracks and 157 potholes. Screeching into my driveway fifteen minutes later, I grabbed her fins, and then reversed the whole process back to the pool.

The maddening part was, after all my effort, the actual using of the fins lay in the coach’s hands. And coach never did use them that practice.

My escapade reminds me of Proverbs 21:31. Like getting horses prepared for battle, we pray for our children and otherwise do all we can to equip them to face the world. But their success lies in God’s hands. Ultimately, God carries them through each circumstance. Our preparation, His victory.

Actually, it’s not a bad deal. At least there aren’t any railroad tracks to cross.

Be prepared, but trust God for the victory.
